Psychology of Books

I was once listening to a talk by a psychologist and my own psychologist (read overthinking) mind set off to work.

The talk was a famous one about humans, being classified into three categories-

1. Givers- Those who only give to others

2. Takers- Those who only take from others

3. Matchers- Those who believe in ‘give and take’ and hence maintain the balance.

What if books were classified in the same way? Books, which like humans, are always surrounding us! I recalled all those that I have read so far and came to my conclusion.

Books are like humans- Givers, Takers and Matchers.

They take what we give.

They give what we take.

And in the process, match the balance. Just as humans.

Fantasy gives the ability to dream, imagine and create a make-believe world of our own. A world that we can call ours- untouched and unadulterated by the often cruel reality.

Adventure gives adrenaline rush, zeal and excitement. It makes us bold and carefree like a child. But sometimes takes away our peace of mind and makes us anxious over the fear of missing out the fun, fills us with regret for not living life to the fullest.

Romance fills us with pleasure for our current relationship or gives us hope for a better one in the future. At the same time, it takes away our sleep and tranquility for the ones that failed us in the past and leaves us with sleepless nights.

Poetry gives rhythm to our erratic hearts, food to our hungry souls, and music to our minds’ lyrics. Good poetry takes away our sanity. Each couplet leaves us in a confused state of calm and tumult over its meaning and origin.

Memoirs give us insight into someone’s life and lessons from their own learning and experiences.

Historical books fill us with pride over the rich and incredible past events and revolutions but snatch back away the same pride when it is a fiction set on the backdrop of a barbaric war.

We, the readers, decide ‘if’ and ‘what’ the books give or take!

But one thing remains constant-

Books TAKE our most precious- ‘Time’

And GIVE the greatest gift- ‘Life and Living’
